Pick a topic to blog about
What sparks your interest? What is something you enjoy talking about? Maybe you are interested in learning about a topic and helping others learn while you do. Whatever your reason for blogging is you will need to choose that before you are able to move any further. Once you find your topic, it is off to the next step.
Get a domain name
This step is super simple and with Bluehost getting a domain name is FREE when you use them for your web hosting, which we will discuss in the next step. Getting a domain name that fits your blog and fits you is key! Imagine it like picking a child. You do not want to pick a domain name that is not flattering or does not fit your personality. www.ppfFinancialBlog.com is my domain name and I went with it because I believe every aspect of the financial world has a past, present, and a future. So whatever you decide to go with, make sure it fits for you! Now that we have found the name we want, it is time to get it as we move onto web hosting!
Chose a web host for your domain name
A web host is basically like your landlord for a rental property. They provide the space and access to your “house”. There are several web hosts to choose from and you are welcome to do your own research into finding which one best fits you. Me personally, after looking through several different hosting services, I went with Bluehost. For $3.45 a month, plus a free domain, it was hard to pass up. Many blogging sites that I frequent all seem to be using it so if they are, then Bluehost must be doing something right. Not to mention Bluehost has a 1-click install for WordPress which we will get into here in just a second. I have also used GoDaddy before and had a pleasant experience with them as well. Plus they are offering a free 1 month trial, so if you aren’t sure if you can or will stick with blogging, this could be a great way to do a test run.
If you decide to go with Bluehost you will be brought to a screen to pick a plan, which is pictured below, after you enter in a domain name to link with the hosting service.
The “basic” package should be all you need to start off with.
If you are anything like me, you have not spent years of your life building websites. This is where WordPress has helped me out significantly. You have the option to use free or purchased “Themes” to get your website started. You will really look like you know what you are doing in just a few clicks. With WordPress you will be able to easily edit your website without the need to know how to create a website on your own. It does all of the work for you! How simple is that?!?!
Customize your blog
Now that you have all of the boring aspects of creating your website out of the way, it is time to move onto the fun stuff. With the use of WordPress you can customize your blog in many different ways. You can start by applying the “Themes” mentioned above. After that you can start adding to your site with whatever customizations you want. There are many different aspects of your website at this point, trust me, you will have plenty of time to play around with all of them. You will find out real quick that you have so many different customization options. Once you have customized your blogging website, it is time to move on to our final step!
Post your first blog article
This is the step that all of the other steps have led up to, the top of the staircase if you will. Here you will post your first blog article. There is no limit to what you can accomplish with the use of these steps. Maybe you already know exactly what you want your first post to be and that is great! Get to writing and let the whole world know you are here. If you do not know what you want to talk about first, try doing what I did, talk about yourself!
So there you have it! You are now the proud owner of your own self-hosted WordPress blog. Now that you have completed all of these steps on how to start a blog in less than 30 Minutes, your next goal is to produce wonderful content for everyone to see. So get out there and happy blogging!!!!
